Comprises a diary by Johnson Frederick Hayward of a voyage on the Sussex from London to Melbourne, 25 Jun.-14 Sept. 1859; and a diary of Martinus Peter Hayward of voyages on the Yorkshire from Plymouth to Melbourne, 29 Mar.-20 Jun. 1863, and on the Essex from Melbourne to London, 3 Jan.-6 Apr. 1864. The diaries include poems and a riddle. Also, biographical notes by Nancy Nicholson, 1983, and press cuttings, 1983, in which the riddle is published and analysed.

The Hayward brothers were born in England. Martinus Peter Hayward was a medical practitioner who lived in South Australia, 1839-1857, and then returned to England.
